Father’s Day 2022, 2023 and 2024

Father’s Day in the UK isn’t a public holiday although it is celebrated by a majority of the country. It is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of June, as it is the US which is where the tradition of father’s day originated.

Father’s Day in the US is said to have originated with Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington whose father, a civil war veteran, raised her and her 5 siblings after their mother died.

President Richard Nixon declared Father’s Day a national holiday in 1972. The UK at this point had already been celebrating father’s day.

It was said that Father’s Day started after a mining tragedy killed 362 men. A day was held to celebrate father’s, but after this day it wasn’t celebrated again, implying that this was linked more to the tragedy than the beginnings of a day dedicated to Fathers.

At one time, during the 1930’s, America made an attempt to get of bother Father’s day and Mother’s Day and create a single day dedicated to both. Realising the money that could be made from two separate days, the idea to scrap the two days was forgotten.
